چکیده

Spatiotemporal correlations of the two-dimensional spring-block (Burridge-Knopoff) model of earthquakes are extensively studied by means of numerical computer simulations. The model is found to exhibit either a " subcritical " , " supercritical " or " near-critical " behavior, depending on the values of the model parameters. Transition between the " subcritical " and " su-percritical " regimes is either continuous or discontinuous. Seismic events in the " subcritical " regime and those in the " supercritical " regime at larger magnitudes exhibit universal scaling properties. In the " supercritical " regime, eminent spatiotemporal correlations, e.g., a remarkable growth of seismic activity preceding the mainshock, arise in earthquake occurrence, whereas such spatiotemporal correlations are significantly suppressed in the " subcritical " regime. Seismic activity is generically suppressed just before the mainshock in a close vicinity of the epicenter of the upcoming event while it remains to be active in the surroundings (the Mogi doughnut). It is also observed that, before and after the mainshock, an apparent B-value of the magnitude distribution decreases or increases in the " supercritical " or " subcritical " regimes, respectively. Such distinct precursory phenomena may open a way to the prediction of the upcoming large event.

Simulation of the Burridge-Knopoff model of earthquakes with variable range stress transfer.

Simple models of earthquake faults are important for understanding the mechanisms for their observed behavior, such as Gutenberg-Richter scaling and the relation between large and small events, which is the basis for various forecasting methods. Although cellular automaton models have been studied extensively in the long-range stress transfer limit, this limit has not been studied for the Burri...

Exponential distributions in a mechanical model for earthquakes.

We study statistical distributions in a mechanical model for an earthquake fault introduced by Burridge and Knopoff [R. Burridge and L. Knopoff, Bull. Seismol. Soc. Am. 57, 341 (1967)]. Our investigations on the size (moment), time duration and number of blocks involved in an event show that exponential distributions are found in a given range of the paramenter space. This occurs when the two k...

Near-mean-field behavior in the generalized Burridge-Knopoff earthquake model with variable-range stress transfer.

Simple models of earthquake faults are important for understanding the mechanisms for their observed behavior in nature, such as Gutenberg-Richter scaling. Because of the importance of long-range interactions in an elastic medium, we generalize the Burridge-Knopoff slider-block model to include variable range stress transfer. We find that the Burridge-Knopoff model with long-range stress transf...

Interoccurrence time statistics in the two-dimensional Burridge-Knopoff earthquake model.

We have numerically investigated statistical properties of the so-called interoccurrence time or the waiting time, i.e., the time interval between successive earthquakes, based on the two-dimensional (2D) spring-block (Burridge-Knopoff) model, selecting the velocity-weakening property as the constitutive friction law. The statistical properties of frequency distribution and the cumulative distr...

The Two-dimensional Nonlinear Burridge-Knopoff Model of Earthquakes

We present a two-dimensional spring-block model of earthquakes with the full nonlinear equations for the forces in terms of displacements. Correspondence of our linearized version to earlier models reveals in them inherently asymmetric elastic properties. Our model generalizes those models and allows an investigation of the effects of internal strains and vectorial forces. The former is found t...
